Modern and Safe Mineral Development.

VarDev is focused on integrating environmental protection, safety and health throughout the Certej Project.

VarDev will not proceed with any mine development until all environmental and construction permits are approved by government authorities.
At each stage of the development process, we engage with local communities and other stakeholders to receive their input on our proposed plans. We then work to include this feedback in future iterations of our plans.

Mining and mineral processing are designed as a cyanide free operation.

VarDev is committed to working with stakeholders to build strong environmental monitoring, management and impact mitigation programs. We have re-imagined the Certej Project from the ground-up to integrate safe and sustainable technologies and systems.
Ore is expected to be processed using a cyanide-free floatation circuit to produce a mineral concentrate. Through this safe process used elsewhere in Romania, Europe and globally, minerals are separated from the surrounding rock without the use of cyanide. The mineral concentrate produced would then be transported to third party facilities for further refinement.

Filtered Tailings.

At Certej, the project is designed to use filtered tailings, where processed material is filtered and stored in a stable, dry form. This is widely recognized as a best available technology for tailings and mine waste management.
In traditional mining operations, ore is crushed and processed to separate minerals from the surrounding rock. The waste material from this process is called “wet tailings”. Traditional wet tailings are a liquid mixture of water and non-mineral rock. Storing wet tailings material requires the construction of dams and is a common practice globally.
VarDev’s strategy is to invest in filtration technology that separates water from crushed rock, producing a stable, filtered material. This material is then combined with waste rock from the mine and stored in areas designed for safety and stability.

Filtered mine waste management has several benefits:

  • We do not need to construct a tailings dam
  • Removing water from the crushed rock creates a more physically stable material and allows for easier environmental remediation throughout the project life cycle
  • Filtered tailings reduce the footprint of the waste storage facilities
  • We recover and recycle nearly all of the water used in this process. Water will be treated and only clean water will be returned to the environment
Filtered mine waste management is a proven technology that has been safely applied at mining operations in Europe and globally.

In addition to implementing best available technologies, we plan to work with stakeholders to clean nearby streams affected by historic mining activities.
